breathe easy
I find utilizing breathing techniques one of, if not the best way, to focus and alleviate stress in times of crunch. Working on that grant for an hour and got 4 more hoursto go? I guarantee your brain will be more prepared to write it if you take 5 minutes before you write the grant to do alternate nostril breathing. This is the best method I have found to clearing my mind and focusing on the task at hand, whether it writing a proposal, making a work plan, writing emails or reading political or scientific reports. No more need for facebook breaks every 20 minutes or snack munching 20 minutes after that.
Alternate nostril breathing aids the right brain communicate with the left brain, and vise-versa, which brings about directional and productive thought progression. It also slows down the heart rate and alleviates muscle tension to feel less stressed and therefore easier to focus.
